CHELSEA manager Jose Mourinho has joked that he could try to sign Steven Gerrard on loan next season following the former England captain’s departure from Liverpool.

Gerrard has agreed to sign for MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in the United States.

When asked if he would try to persuade Gerrard to stay in the Premier League, Mourinho said, “Or perhaps to take him on loan?” before breaking into laughter.

Mourinho, who tried to sign Gerrard in 2005, says “I’m not happy he leaves. I would love the Premier League to keep the best players and I believe he has the quality to play for more years.”

The Chelsea manager applauded Gerrard off the field when the midfielder was substituted in the 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Chelsea in the League Cup semifinal on Tuesday. source: shanghaidaily.com

Mourinho’s tongue-in-cheek remark comes after long-serving former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard ended up with Manchester City this season, after an apparent deal with New York City FC seemed to mean his Premier League career was over.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy claim Chelsea is preparing a bid for Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado although La Viola would not sell the Colombian for less than 35m euros (US$40million).

Cuadrado, a reported summer transfer target for Manchester United and Barcelona, has eclipsed his shaky start to the season with a string of solid performances to help the Serie A side up to sixth place.

Reports claim Chelsea is offering 27 million euros (US$31million) for the Colombian international, although Gazzetta dello Sport said Fiorentina club President Andrea Della Valle would not sell for less than the value of his buy-out clause.

On the pitch, a dazzling solo goal by Raheem Sterling earned Liverpool a 1-1 draw on Tuesday after Eden Hazard’s penalty had put Chelsea ahead. The home side was denied by some brilliant goalkeeping by Thibaut Courtois.

Hazard’s away goal gives Premier League leader Chelsea a slender advantage ahead of next week’s return leg at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool has lost only once in its last 15 games in all competitions.
